On 20 and 21 November 2017, European Commission First Vice-President Frans Timmermans, will be hosting, together with Věra Jourova, European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, the 2017 Colloquium on Fundamental Rights to be held in Brussels, Belgium. They would be honoured if youwould accept to participate and take an active part in the discussions. This year’s focus will be on “women’s rights in turbulent times”. The European Commission’s Annual Colloquia on fundamental rights aim at improving mutual cooperation and a greater political engagement for the promotion and protection of fundamental rights in Europe and the world.
At this year’s Colloquium, politicians and policy makers in the European Union, representatives of civil society and international organisations, leading academics, activists, representatives of trade unions and companies, and journalists, reflect together, on the relationship between the enjoyment of fundamental rights for women and girls, and resilient democratic societies. We would in particular like to explore how the current attack on women’s rights is linked to the rise of populism, extremism and other wider threats to democracy and fundamental rights, such as racism, anti-Muslim hatred and hate crime. The Colloquium aims to go beyond the technical discussions on gender equality policies and legislation, and instead place women’s rights in a broader framework of social justice.
The broad range of topics for discussion will include the link between stereotypes, biases, and misogyny in our societies and the participation of women in the labour market, in the public debate and in political life on the one hand, and the impact of this normalisation of misogyny in their private lives. We will explore stereotypes and key obstacles to women’s rights and gender equality, the links between violence against women and other forms of violence in society, the international women’s movement and the shifting space for civil society.
You will find attached the provisional programme which will give you a more precise idea of how we intend to organise the different sessions. Additional information can also be found on the Colloquium website.
